Voip Service

Having a Voip service is a blessing for all companies, but some caution should be observed when using the video facility.

Fast and reliable broadband means that Voice Over Internet Protocol (to give the Voip service its official title) is a great asset. Not only is the ability to get cost-effective calls from work-station to work-station a great bonus, but it makes the more expensive video-conferencing concept seem a little less attractive.

But the Voip service video facility, which means you can see the person you’re talking to, can lead to some amusing anecdotes.

When using Voip service for the first time, this blogger had an embarrassing moment. Used to the anonymity of a landline phone, a good pick of the nose, pacing up and down the office, and meaningless hand gestures were the norm.

But the Voip service video facility changes all that: you could see the person you’re talking to and visa versa of course; unless you opt out of that.

I was talking to a particularly difficult client, who could, or would not, see my point of view on a piece of writing. Now not realising that my camera was on, but they had opted not to open their camera, so I couldn’t see them and get the warning, I opted for my silent Chimpanzee routine, safe in the knowledge that the Voip service would not give me away.

My routine was my way of coping with dissent. I kept my voice level, argued the point back and forth, but used the same face expressions I imagined an enraged Chimpanzee would pull when not allowed a banana. My voice contorted from making silent o’s, to manic grinning and teeth baring. It was when the client became silent that I realised the Voip service video facility had given me away, displaying all my proud chimp like expressions to a man who had commissioned me for some serious writing. Needless to say, after that particular VoIP call, I heard no more from the client.

So be warned, just make sure that the Voip service video facility is turned off, should you feel the need to visually express yourself.
